Mental health related issues in America has long been an area in healthcare that has often been overlooked. Our department – the only department dedicated to mental health in a school of public health – brings together leading researchers across multiple disciplines joined by their passion for understanding, preventing, and treating mental health and substance use disorders.
Blaming anything other than the individual choices (e.g. the look of the gun because it had a handle on the front of it, or Saturday Morning Cartoon violence) for violent crime is never going to give us the results we want, or even address the real issue: that people make choices and do what they want to because they want to, even through the fog of mental illness.
Mental health is a socially constructed and socially defined concept; that is, different societies, groups, cultures, institutions and professions have very different ways of conceptualizing its nature and causes, determining what is mentally healthy, and deciding what interventions, if any, are appropriate.
Objective: The objective of this study was to provide a comprehensive profile of young people seeking Web-based mental health care through eheadspace (the headspace Web-based counseling platform), and to compare this with the profile of those accessing help in-person through a headspace center.
The objective of our proposal, to be released in early July, is for people with mental health problems, regardless of their age, ethnicity or any other characteristic to have swift access to holistic, integrated and evidence-based care for the biological, psychological and social issues related to their needs, in the least restrictive setting and as close to home as possible.
