A Public health worker is person who has a lot of things to cover in their jobs. As soon as public health somehow becomes about wider flourishing - with that worrying word ‘ wellbeing ' - it is in the domain of ethics and politics And as Katharina Kieslich reminded the PHE conference , fair-minded people will not all agree on the priorities of any department or organisation, even in public health.
Although surveillance was originally concerned with protection of the population against infectious disease (Langmuir 1963), more recently a wide variety of health events, such as childhood lead poisoning, birth defects, injuries, and behavioral risk factors, have been included in surveillance activities (Thacker and Stroup 1994).
We are (as in so many things) 'miseducated' about what we truly need and what we can truly do without; we are not encouraged to find a balance in life, we are generally pushed towards one type of health or the other by those around us or that voice within us, given a specific life goal we have to achieve at the expense of finding a healthy balance in all three.
While public health is comprised of many professional disciplines such as medicine, dentistry, nursing, optometry, nutrition, social work, environmental sciences, health education, health services administration, and the behavioral sciences, its activities focus on entire populations rather than on individual patients.
Also since we are heading to the presidential election in the States in Nov 2008 and one of the most important parts of debates among the candidates is about Health Care in this country I would like to spend time and learn about candidates and parties viewpoints in this aspect.
